The subject advantage in relative clauses: A review

چکیده
The question of whether there exists a universal subject preference in relativization has stimulated research wide range languages and across different domains, yielding an extensive body literature relative clause acquisition processing. In this article, we aim at consolidating the efforts existing order to inform further exploration universality with comprehensive analysis relevant work (including journal articles on empirical studies, dissertations, conference proceedings). We present overview proposals regarding source(s) subject-object asymmetry from cross-linguistic perspective discuss commonly used methodologies area, survey processing linguistic communities, including native speakers, second language learners, clinical populations, heritage speakers.

Processing Chinese Relative Clauses: Evidence for the Subject-Relative Advantage
A general fact about language is that subject relative clauses are easier to process than object relative clauses. Recently, several self-paced reading studies have presented surprising evidence that object relatives in Chinese are easier to process than subject relatives. We carried out three self-paced reading experiments that attempted to replicate these results. Two of our three studies fou...
متن کاملSubject Preference in the Processing of Relative Clauses in Chinese
A controversy in the sentence processing literature regarding relative-clause processing was raised by Hsiao and Gibson’s (2003) study of Chinese relative clauses. Their study suggested that, contrary to the patterns found in all other languages, Chinese relative clauses showed a processing preference for object extractions. This result posed a challenge to sentence processing theories that att...

Chinese relative clauses are an important test case for pitting the predictions of expectation-based accounts against those of memory-based theories. The memory-based accounts predict that object relatives should be easier to process than subject relatives because, in object relatives, less linguistic material intervenes between the head noun and the gap (or verb) that it associates with. By co...
متن کاملRelative Clauses
In this chapter, we examine the typology of relative clauses. We will define relative clauses as follows: (1) A relative clause (RC) is a subordinate clause which delimits the reference of an NP by specifying the role of the referent of that NP in the situation described by the RC. Since the NP whose reference is being delimited is in the matrix clause, we will call it NP mat , and we will call...
متن کاملComprehension of Subject and Object Relative Clauses in a Trilingual Acquisition Context
Chinese relative clauses (RCs) have word order properties that are distinctly rare across languages of the world; such properties provide a good testing ground to tease apart predictions regarding the relative complexity of subject and object RCs in acquisition and processing. This study considers these special word order properties in a multilingual acquisition context, examining how Cantonese...
